What Is Food Trailer Insurance?
Mobile food trailer insurance is a series of general liability insurance coverages designed to protect your food trailer when it is unhooked from your vehicle and parked at an event or business location. It’s there to help cover third-party incidents that occur in, on, or around your food trailer.
Food Liability Insurance Program (FLIP) is proud to be the only provider offering a food trailer endorsement, giving you the best possible liability coverage for your business.
Please note that food trailer insurance is not commercial auto insurance, which FLIP doesn’t offer at this time.
How Much Does Food Trailer Insurance Cost?
The cost of food trailer insurance starts at $38.42 per month and includes two parts:
- Base FLIP policy starting at $25.92 per month
- Food Trailer Endorsement for $12.50 per month
When applying for food trailer insurance, don’t forget to add the Food Trailer Endorsement during checkout! You must add this coverage to your base policy to extend your general liability coverage to your trailer.
We know not all food trailers are the same, so we don’t think all insurance policies should be the same either! Tailor your food trailer policy to your business and add additional coverages and increased limits to fit your unique business needs.
What Types of Insurance Does a Food Trailer Need?
As a mobile food service business, it’s important to have both general and product liability insurance in case an individual is injured or becomes sick. This could happen as a result of your business operations or from consuming your product.
Additionally, many locations and events where you might want to do business require vendors to have insurance for food trailers. It’s very common for farmers markets and food festivals to ask for proof of insurance before they allow you to participate.
FLIP offers the best food trailer insurance available, helping you take care of the costs so you can continue running your business and getting exciting new vending opportunities.
Additional policy options include:
- Free and Unlimited Additional Insureds
- Liquor Liability Coverage
Let's Talk About Numbers for Food Trailer Insurance
Food Trailer Insurance Coverage Details
General Liability
Aggregate Limit: $2,000,000
General liability insurance for food trailers can protect your business in the event of third-party bodily injury or property damage claims. If a customer trips over your power cords, for example, you could be held liable. With general liability insurance, you’re covered from those costs.
Product Liability
Aggregate Limit: $2,000,000
While you never want it to happen, food poisoning is a risk of the trade. While proper food preparation techniques can help mitigate this, there’s still a chance a customer could become sick or have an allergic reaction to your food. Product liability insurance is there to shield you from claims like these, should one happen to you.
Inland Marine (Tools & Equipment)
Aggregate Limit: $10,000
Tools and equipment insurance extends coverage to your valuable business equipment, like a generator, deep fryer, or refrigerator. If your generator or deep fryer is ever damaged by events out of your control, such as weather or theft, then you could be reimbursed or compensated for the damages with tools and equipment insurance.
Damage to Premises Rented
Aggregate Limit: $300,000
Damage to premises rented can help protect your business when you operate in several different locations. It may cover you for damages caused by your business in the places you rent. Plus, FLIP offers business owners free and unlimited additional insureds for those who require it.
Workers’ Compensation
Policy Limit: $1,000,000
Workers’ compensation insurance is designed to protect you from the expensive cost of claims if one of your employees gets hurt or dies on the job. If you have employees working in or around your food trailer, this coverage is essential. You may even be required to purchase workers’ compensation insurance by the state where you do business.

- Generators being stolen while vending at an event
- Fire damage to the trailer and other business gear
- Another vehicle crashing into the parked trailer
- A severe storm causing water damage to equipment inside the food trailer
- Someone breaking into the food trailer, stealing equipment and damaging the trailer in the process
Claims like these could happen to anyone—that’s where food trailer insurance can save the day! With insurance, the cost of these claims can be mitigated or even eliminated.
What Is the Difference Between Food Truck and Food Trailer Insurance?
Food truck insurance is different from insurance for food trailers because food trucks are mobile vehicles, whereas a food trailer is towed behind another vehicle.
If you own a food truck, you will need food truck insurance. FLIP’s special food trailer endorsement, however, extends coverage to a trailer when it’s parked and detached from the towing vehicle.
